Let's go back to the origins of the boat yard here in Eyemouth. Where did it all start and how have things grown from then to now?
In 1841, following an apprenticeship with James Lee in Tweedmouth, James Weatherhead Sr. set up the yard of Hall and Weatherhead at Eyemouth in partnership with John Hall.
History
The new boat yard built yawls, which were 34-36 feet long for the herring fishing industry. In 1881 the year of the disaster otherwise known as 'Black Friday', saw a fleet of larger vessels being built. These were built fully decked, between 40-50 feet in length and costing up to £400.
After James Sr died in 1905, James Jr and his family moved to Brown's Bank and continued the business together with his son James William.
The first motorised boat was the 'Maggie Janes' which was converted in early 1907 with a 55hp Gardner Engine. Later, in 1911 the 'Bolinders' was built with a 120hp twin cylinder engine running on paraffin.
When James Jr died on Christmas eve 1924, the yard then passed to his son, James William, born 1880, who was wheelchair bound. He ran the yard for 4 years (till 1928) then it was leased out.
When the yard was returned to them after the leasing in 1946, the unmarried James William sold the yard to his Cockenzie relatives for a nominal fee. The yard was named 'William Weatherhead, Sons & Co Ltd.
The boat yard had built approximately 200-250 boats during this time. Eventually, after a few more owners, Eyemouth Marine Ltd was founded in 2017.
